May Sketch Fest - sign up here!

When is it?

The Sketch Fest will run from noon on Friday May 21, through noon, Saturday May 22, Alaska Time.

Not sure about timezones? Check out these handy sites:

http://www.timezoneconverter.com/
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=81

(Thank you, April!)

You do not have to participate for the entire 24 hours - you may drop in at any time you are available. (I personally need my beauty sleep - I will be opening up the Sketch Fest and participating for ~8 hours on Friday, sleeping, and then closing it after a few hours of sketching on Saturday.)

How does it work?

If you are interested in participating, please sign up in the comments below, so I have an idea of what to expect. :)

Anyone - artist or audience! - is invited to leave us prompts throughout the Sketch Fest. Prompts can be titles, ideas, single words, photographs... pretty much anything.

The participating artists claim these prompts. When claiming a prompt, reply directly to the person who left the prompt, and please call it out in the subject of the comment. CLAIM: Mushroom Imp, CLAIM: side-saddle snail, etc. (This way, it's easy to see at a glance what's a claim, and what's just a random side comment, even when there are a 100 comments to sift through.)

Artists have 1 hour to complete a sketch for the prompts they claim. You aren't required to post it within an hour - maybe you get a phone call, or want to scan all of your finished sketches at once, or who knows. You are simply on the honor system not to spend more than one hour on the sketch before posting it. You are also invited to finish the pieces later, if you like what you start! Any medium is welcome. You don't have to spend the whole hour on a sketch - if you get to a good stopping point after 20 minutes, that's fine!

When you post the finished sketch, reply directly to the person who left the prompt - try to avoid replying to your own claim, as the person is unlikely to get an email alert if you do that. In the subject of the comment, use the following format: SKETCH: Star Dancer, SKETCH: young dragon, etc.

You can see how it worked last time, at this entry: http://community.livejournal.com/emglivejournal/1793.html (Note that it was pretty chaotic with people not using standard subject lines, and it's a little hard to pick out what got finished, and what got claimed...)

Does it cost anything?

Participation, as an artist or as a prompter, is completely free. Artists may choose to ask for donations, or offer their sketches for sale during the Sketch Fest. For some business model ideas (as well as tips on sharing your finished work), see this post.

I am accepting donations towards a streamlined off-livejournal site to manage future Sketch Fests. Features would include uploading and re-sizing tools, a finished 'wall' of thumbnails, and easy prompt, claim and final sketch management tools. If I get to $50 before the Sketch Fest, I will make a very basic uploading form available for artists for THIS Sketch Fest that will resize your images and allow them to easily be posted as a thumbnail and link to a larger image, right in the comments at livejournal.

Questions?

If you have any questions or suggestions, please ask them in the comments here!

Draw and prompt! :)

Business Model:

Donate 2 ways. Donate because you want to see me do more work, or donate to one of my charities and get a special piece of artwork for it!

Also, if you want a sketch from this or a previous Sketch-up, let me know. I'll sell the roughs for $15.

Finished sketches (sketches turned into finished artwork) will vary upon the medium, final size, and detail. $20-50.

Goals:
Draw something outside of my comfort zone. Ex. humans
Draw at least 10 sketches. Minimum.
Draw one of my various characters interacting with a prompt.

Officially signing up! :)

I will be sketching for probably 10 of the 24 hours, and I hope to accomplish the following:

  • Work in media I don't usually use (I've already found some charcoal and some scratchboard)
  • Finish 8 pieces appropriate for posting to Portrait Adoption
  • Finish 12 total pieces.

I'll be using a similar business model as before: 1 out of every 6 pieces will be given free to the prompter, the other sketches will be offered for sale/adoption - and available to the prompter first at a lower price. All funds raised from the Sketch Fest go into the webpage fund. (Because I really have to spend my time on paying projects after nearly 3 weeks off for surgery!)

  • Water and Fire getting along

    Vegetables afraid of being eaten

    A tired badger

    Star Crossed Kiwis

    An alien landscape

That's all I got for now

These are awesome prompts, but hold onto them and post them in the Sketch Fest post next week! :)

I.... am a complete and utter shmoo.

I thought the sketch fest was today. /facepalm

I cannot figure out why I thought it was the 21st today and NOT the 14th. I'm sorry! /is embarrassed. -.-

hihi, I got to have him in my story book! thank you for the great prompt!

Tossing in my hat then (just ignore the prompts thing for now *whistles*)

Not a professional, just wanting the practice. Will probably be sketching 6 to 8 of the 24 hour period (work and sleep have to factor into there) but I'm hoping to put some of this advice from the "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" book to use.

Goals: Make something that doesn't suck!
    At least 6 times!

Ohh like drawing upside down? That was a good piece of advice from that book that I tried. :) ;) I love that book! Best of luck and most of all have fun. :)

    I'm in!

Goals: Hoping to beat my 3 sketch totals from the last two (er... I had my own private sketch fest when last months was scheduled!!).

Will be sketching for the entire day that fits Aussie waking hours between the sketch fest time zones, but find I need to take 30 min - 1 hour breaks between each sketch to eat, scan, shower, generally day to day things ^_^ otherwise the whole day is booked in!

    Oh... goals..

Goals: do more sketches this time, last time I did 3 :)

I will be sketching for a day, same as what Selina said really, but I will be studying in between.

I will be accepting donations, and offering sketches for sale.

    Like Silentstephi, not professional

My goal is basically to sketch! Particularly looking to sketch outside my comfort zone. For me, this means people!

    I like the extended hours!!!

Goals--do art. Hope to be rested and focused enough to do good art.

If I am, do at least a few things good enough to sell! If not, at least take a break from working and writing.

I'm in! Can't wait, last one sounded like so much fun...

Same as Selina, will be sketching as much as the day allows in Aussie time and with general other real-world duties.

Ah, what a refreshing format to stretch the ole' sketching skills!

I have enough education and practice in drawn mediums that I could/would/should go flash animator with a pad. Sadly, that medium is not what makes the bread.

I love the opportunity to face a challenge such as this.

    Been looking forward to this!

I'm in. Anytime the baby's sleeping. I have not picked up a brush since her birth, and really don't know how it'll go now with my shaky hands (hyperthyroidism). (Who knows? Maybe my stuff'll look better. ;P ) I don't think I'll spend more than a half-hour on each piece though. I may offer each (color) sketch for $15. Can't offer finished pieces as I probably won't have the time. Aiming for 4-5 pieces. Because I'm crazy.

Another mom? Whoot, I so totally understand. It was something like 2 and a half years, before I touched anything drawn, and then my son at toddler stage put cheesy hands all over a sketch that was partly finished.

You so have my personal support and encouragment! Good luck!! :)

    I'm having a go.
Just aiming for a few drawings and seeing how I do.
I'll have more of an idea of what targeted goals I want to set for next time.

I'll sketch as much as I can during the time alloted. Goals:

Draw! Mostly pieces for Portrait Adoption, though I will do pretty much anything that catches my fancy. I will be working with pencil and micron pen, my tablet is out for repair.

Finish at least six pieces and, like Ellen, I will give one sketch out of six free to the prompter. All other sketches will be from $5 to $30, and will be posted for sale through Portrait Adoption if I am contacted by any interested parties.

I doubt if I'll get to sketch, but I'll be a cheerleader!

Alaska time converted to Eastern USA: 4PM Friday to 4 PM Saturday. :)

Awesome that'll give me more time to caulk the house and get some chores done. Whoot!

Hi everyone I decided to join please sign me up if it's not too late :)
Thank you jenny for the eastern time schedule that would be me too :) cant wait I'm so excited :)
